        One of the most distinctive features of cities was the carefully planned drainage system if         you look at the plan of the lower town you will notice that roads and streets were laid out         along an approximate 'grid' pattern, intersecting at right angles. It seems that streets with         drains were laid out first and then house built along them. If domestic waste water had to         follow into the street drains, every house needed to have at least one wall along a street.

        Not everywhere were the leader people of the court- ranis, rajas, nawabs,and taluqdars.Often         the message of rebellion was carried by ordinary men, and woman and in places by religious         men too. From Meerut, these were reports that a fakir had appeared riding an elephant and         the repoys were visiting him frequently. In lucknow, after the annexation of Awadh, there        were amny religious leaders and self -styled prophets who preached the destruction of British         rule.

        Students stopped going to schools and colleges run by government. Lawyers refused to         attend court. The working class went on strike in 1921, involving 600000 workers and a loss         of seven million work days. The Countryside was something with discontent too. Hill tribes in         Northern Andhra violated the forest laws, farmers in Awadh did not pay taxes. Peasants in         Kumaun refused to carry loads for colored officials. These protest movements were         sometimes carried out in defiance of the local nationalist leadership. Peasans, workers, and         others interpreted and acted upon the call to non cooperate with colonial rule in ways that         best suited their interests, rather than conform to the dictates laid down from above.
